The History of The Curious George Series and It's Authors
- Margarete Elisabeth Waldstein (AKA Margret Elizabeth Rey) was born in
Germany in 19061.
- Hans Augusto Rey was born in Germany in 1898.1
- Margret Elizabeth Rey flees to Brazil to escape Nazism. Hans moves to
Brazil to work at a family business.1
- Margret Elizabeth Rey meets Hans Rey in Brazil.2
- Margret and Hans marry in 1935 and moved to Paris, France that same year.2
- Hans Rey writes books featuring animal drawings while in Paris. Hans
writes ''Raffi and the Nine Monkeys'', which features one very popular monkey
named Curious George. This sparked the idea of writing a separate book about
Curious George.2
- Hans and Margret Rey fled Paris just hours before its collapse to the
Nazis. The Reys fled to Spanish border, bought train tickets to Lisbon,
Portugal, and then secured travel back to Brazil.2
- The Reys moved to New York, New York.2
- Houghton Mifflin published their Curious George series in 1941. Margret
and Hans Rey wrote seven stories together.2
- Hans Rey died in 1977 but Margret continued writing more than two dozen
additional books. Also, in 1980, a series of short films based on the books
were produced.2
